Imagine the time – 1922; Suffragettes had only just won the right to vote, prohibition was in full swing, “Speak Easys” were continually growing in underground popularity, and Al Capone was a young man, just beginning to gain a foothold in the organized crime scene. Jazz tunes by African American musicians although already wildly popular, had just begun to receive recognition in the recording industry. Flapper style of dress was starting to bring in those shortened hemlines so often associated with the style and, for the first time, the entire World Series was broadcast over the radio.
Edward Collings Knight Jr. and his wife Marie Louise Lebel were wealthy northern industrialists with homes in Philadelphia, PA, and Middletown, Rhode Island. Mr. Knight was an avid waterfowl hunter and Marie Louise especially admired the decorative and architectural style of Art Nouveau. Having visited the Lighthouse Club on the Currituck Outer Banks Mr. Knight decided to purchase the 4.5 mile tract of land upon which the club sat. The land stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Currituck Sound. This area, known as Corolla, was just a sleepy little village. Most of the folks and their families found themselves here to hold such posts as operating the US Life Saving Station, Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Corolla Post Office, and teaching school to the number of children in the village. The Knights began construction of the 5 floor, 21,000 square foot home in 1922 and finished in 1925. Families and friends often visited the unique property known as Corolla Island.
