2009 Tour Descriptions, Hours and Rates

Year Round Standard Tours:  9:00 am to 5:00 pm Offered Daily April through November and closed on Sundays December through February.  Call ahead for holiday schedule at 252-453-9040 ext. 2.  The Standard Tour takes about an hour to complete.  It is recommended that you arrive by 4:00 pm to take the last tour of the day.  images/interior.jpg

Standard Tour:  This self-guided tour (audio recording) covers the first two floors where the Knight family lived and an exhibition gallery in the basement. The cost is $7 per person with children 8 years old and younger admitted at no charge when accompanied by a paying adult. The Standard Tour does not require advance reservation. 

Search and Find Tour:  The Standard Tour with a challenging twist.  Appropriate for ages 10-13, cost is $7 for an entertaining and educational approach to identifying items found throughout the historic residence.  This tour does not require advance reservation.

The following Specialty Tours are currently available Monday through Friday with 24-hour advance reservation requested.

Docent-Led Standard Tour: 2:00 pm This tour provides the same information as the Standard Tour but affords the opportunity to ask questions, and discuss areas of interest with a knowledgeable guide.  It is recommended for age 12 and older and admission is $15 per person.  Groups of 15 or more $10 per person.

Behind the Scenes Tours

Behind the Scenes Tours: 3:00 pm This tour is appropriate for ages 13 and older at a cost of $7 per person. The tour covers the third floor servants quarters, the Curator's space, attic, and concludes at the historic boathouse.

Buck's Restoration Tour:  Wednesdays at 2:00 pm $7 per person to hear first-hand about the multi-million dollar restoration of the historic Whalehead Club.  Buck served as Chairman of the Whalehead Preservation Trust during this critical time and shares photos and stories of how it was accomplished.  

Nuts and Bolts of the Whalehead Club:  2:30 pm $7 per person recommended for those with an interest in learning about the mechanical construction of a 1920's architectural treasure, as well as what it takes to maintain the Whalehead Club today.

Children's Art Time: 10:00 am Appropriate for age 2-5 at a cost of $5 per child.

Children's Treasure Hunt: 10:00 am  This tour is appropriate for ages 6-9 at a cost of $5 per person. Children's Tour & Treasure HuntParents, guardians, older siblings or anyone accompanying a child on the tour will be expected to purchase a ticket. The tour teaches history, art, environmental awareness, geography, navigational skills, and encourages critical thinking and sharing. Each child receives a prize!

Legends, Lore and Ghost Tour: 4:00 pm This popular tour encompasses legend and lore of the Outer Banks with a focus on Corolla Village and the Whalehead Club. This tour is recommended for age 6 and older at a cost of $7 per person.

Moonlight Ghost Tour:  Nov. through April on the first Saturday night of each month beginning promptly at 7:30 pm. Frequently sold out, call early to reserve your chance to see the house at night and hear spooky tales of the Whalehead Club's past including Lost Pirates, Shipwrecks, Mr. Knight's Smoking Cigar, and much more! The cost is $14 per person and $7 for 8 years old and younger when accompanied by paying adult.

Combo Tours:  Standard Audio Tour in combination with a Behind the Scenes, Daylight Ghost Tour, or a Nuts & Bolts of the Whalehead Club on the same day -$12 per person.
